2012 RED HYDRANT YEAR OF BEAUTY!

2012 Red Hydrant Year of Beauty...CONTINUES!

Did you ever wonder why you called three weeks in advance for an appointment on a specific day and time only to find the time requested was already booked?  Is was possibly booked with a Year of Beauty Customer.

Many of our customers took advantage of a program we offered last year for the first time...The Red Hydrant Year of Beauty. This FREE program is simple...book your dog's grooming appointments for the entire year and receive a 10% savings on all Boutique purchases for the entire year.

For example, this way you can consistently have the first Wednesday afternoon of each month at 1:00 p.m. booked for an entire year. Maybe you prefer every 6 weeks on Thursday mornings at 8:00 a..m....Done! We even telephone you the day before to remind you of your upcoming appointment. Of course "life" happens and appointments need to be adjusted from time to time.  All you need to do is telephone and make the adjustment and there is of course, no charge for changing.

Given the HUGE success of this program, we have added even more enhancements to this FREE program:

  • Complimentary Nail Trims when booking a bath and brush appointment between grooms. A $15.00 Value each time you take advantage!
  • NEW THIS YEAR - Lovely Red re-usable shopping tote with side pockets and Red Hydrant logo silk-screened on the side.  These are great for grocery shopping, pool or beach tote bags or numerous other uses.

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS

NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS!

Each year millions of people worldwide make New Year's resolutions that statically last only a few days.
Here is how your dog can support you in achieving success with three popular resolutions!  What is on your list?  Watch Facebook this month and add some of your favorites!

1)    LOSE WEIGHT AND GET FIT!

a.    Go for walks...it is good for you and the dog!
b.    Instead of just taking the dog to the dog park...run with your dog while you are there!  More than likely you will have all the dogs supporting you by running along with you.
c.    Lift your dog onto the patio table and brush them at least once a week!  Remember to use a towel as traction for your fur-baby.
2)   SAVE MORE MONEY!
a.    If you are someone who likes to bathe their dog at home, take advantage of the January 20% OFF on Davis Shampoos and home grooming products!
b.    Take advantage of the Red Hydrant Year of Beauty program.  You know you are going to have your dog groomed, so why not go ahead and pre-book their appointments.  In addition to having the appointment dates and time you want, you will save 10% on all Boutique items the entire year!
c.    Make sure to brush your dog regularly in order to prevent excessive matting and thus potential up-charges while grooming.  If you are uncertain if you are doing it well, simply telephone the store and book a COMPLIMENTARY brush lesson!
3)    BE LESS STRESSED!
a.    Get on the floor at least once a day and play with your dog!  Let them crawl all over you and give you a lick or kiss.  It is simply not possible to be in a bad mood when you get up!  It is a great start to the day!
b.    Take your dog for a walk as soon as you get home from work.  Don't take your phone, just your dog and their lead.  Tell your dog all about your day...they are GREAT listeners!

20% OFF ALL DAVIS GROOMING PRODUCTS!

20% OFF ALL DAVIS GROOMING PRODUCTS!

HOLIDAY BREAK!

HOLIDAY BREAK!

Our staff has worked tirelessly the past few months in order to "be there" for our clients, but it is time for a winter break!  In January, as in years past the Red Hydrant will be closed beginning Sunday, January 15, 2012 and will reopen on Monday, January 23, 2012 at 9:00 a.m.  This week is used to send equipment away for service and maintenance as well as give our staff a much needed "break" after the busy holiday weeks.

Here are a few pictures from our last winter break!

Note from Martin and Roman!
In reflection, 2011 was one of the most challenging and yet most rewarding years in our six year history.

We had a few challenges:
  • Our rent escalated 9%, health insurance went up 19%, professional products increased an average of 5% across the board, and our state and federal taxes went up.  Bottom line, our expenses went through the roof!
  • We shared in the sorrow and sadness of the passing of an unusually disproportionate large amount of our clients this past year.  There were several weeks we lost two and three clients within the same week.  Our hearts break each time we hear of the loss of your pet and our friend.  Their memory lives on in our hearts.  They have been memorialized on the Red Hydrant's Web Site Memorial Page.

Yet we still had many rewards:

  • We were able to recruit and expand our staff with talented and loving people.
  • We survived a major remodel and space re-configuration without being closed even one day.  This reconfiguration has enabled us to work more efficiently in the back of the house, and without sacrificing usable Boutique space.
  • We were asked to help a local rescue agency in the 4th quarter of the year and have been blessed with seeing some of these rescue dogs be adopted in our own store and right off the grooming table.
  • We expanded our hours to be open Monday through Saturday in an effort to accommodate even more customer's scheduling needs.
  • Hosted our 6th Pet Portrait session with Cloud 9 Studios.  Hard to believe, but the photos get better each year!

  •  We LOVE what we do.  How many people in this day and time can honestly say that?

Most importantly, we have you...our customer!  In this day of box and chain stores, we have worked diligently to strive to deliver great customer service for you and love and care for your pet!  This type of service is a reward for both Roman and me.

In closing, on behalf of all the staff at the Red Hydrant, our wish for you and your family is a blessed and safe holiday season and a New Year filled with love and prosperity!

REMODELED RED HYDRANT!
Thank you for all the great and many wonderful comments about the remodel of the store this year. Not only did we repaint the entire store with a new color palette, we doubled the bathing and drying area in the back to make it more efficient and effective for our staff.

Here are just a few of the pictures of the Boutique.

HOLIDAY HALITOSIS!

HOLIDAY HALITOSIS

...does your dog have bad breath?

OK...Grandma is coming for a visit and the house has been cleaned. The lawn is mowed and the flower beds weeded. The kids' rooms are picked up and they even got a haircut before she arrived. You made certain the house was freshly dusted...even the tops of the pictures hanging on the wall.

Everything is going great until she leans over to say hello to the dog and Grandma makes a face. She claims "the dog's breath smells like they just ate something from the kitty litter box." WAIT A MINUTE! You don't even have a cat! YOUR DOG HAS BAD BREATH!

It is not too late! Your dog needs PlaqClnz!

This is a 15-minute, chemical-free service at the Red Hydrant followed up with a daily swipe of gel. No brushing, muss  or fuss! This will also help to break down built up plaque and tarter and help to prevent build up.

For the Month of November, the take home gel is 20% OFF its regular price and is only $17.60...enough for 3 months. That is less than $6.00 a month to make sure your dog does not have HOLIDAY HALITOSIS!

ASK THE GROOMER!

Ask the Groomer!

I was shocked last week when I came to pick up my dog at the Red Hydrant and over-heard them say, "I think Bella wants some ice cream." Please explain~

As most of you know, when you drop off your dog for grooming or return to pick them up after grooming, there is seldom a lot of barking or crying. Most of the time, the dogs either doze off or simply watch us move about as we bathe and groom another dog. However, because we watch the dogs at all times, we can usually tell if they need to "go outside", "go potty" or "go to the bathroom." We don't want to say "go outside" or we will have 12 dogs all at once barking and excited. We came up with the code word "ice cream."

Please be assured we do not give or even have ice cream on property!

...However, it is confirmed that Roman always has at least one pint of Ben and Jerry's in the freezer at home for those emergency situations!

DON'T BE LATE FOR AN IMPORTANT DATE!

Don't be late for an important date!

Can you believe it, Thanksgiving is only 23 days away. YIKES! Have you made all of your Holiday grooming and bathing appointments? If not, please hurry. We are filling up fast...some days are already completely booked. Call 813.388.6810 today!

For your added convenience we will be open the Sunday prior to Thanksgiving as well as the Sunday prior to Christmas.

MADE IN THE USA!

 Made in the USA!

If you have not noticed, we have tried very hard to find wonderful, safe, fun and healthy treats and toys for the Boutique that are all MADE IN THE USA. Whenever possible we shop and support independent businesses that have office and production facilities in the United States. We have found that we are able to get fresher treats faster and it makes special orders easier and possible! If we do not have it, we more than likely can SPECIAL ORDER it for you!

ASK THE GROOMER!

Ask the Groomer!

My dog recently had a terrible experience at the groomer and I am worried how he will react.  What should I do? Wow...what a timely question.  We are hearing of mishaps at other groom shops more frequently every week. Let me share a few thoughts.

  1. If you elect to go to a new groomer based on a previous experience(s), PLEASE SHARE with the new groomer a brief history of why you are selecting a new groomer.  This would allow us to provide extra time and assurance to comfort your dog that they are in a safe and loving environment.
  2. If you elect to select another groomer, ask questions about their experience. Ask for a tour of the facility.  Do they have pictures of some of the dogs that they groom? Does the space have an odor? Unfortunately, in Florida and most states, there are NO EDUCATION OR CERTIFICATION REQUIREMENTS.  In other words, anyone with a pair of clippers from a discount store can call themselves a groomer.
  3. Rushing the groomer is seldom a good idea.  If the groomer needs to move slower than normal with your dog on a certain day, allow them that latitude.  Some dogs are startled by storms or the barometric pressure changes that occur with Florida weather.  Some dogs may be tired or sensitive due to changes at home...the kids back in school, adjustments to eating or walking routines or the sight of Mom or Dad's suitcase appearing because they are packing for a two-day business trip.
  4. Share with them the things you liked and the things that you disliked to help ensure it does not happen going forward.
  5. Did you know it is a Red Hydrant condition of employment they attend at least one grooming continuing education event annually?  At the end of October this year, Martin will be escorting the entire staff to a National Dog Groomers Association seminar in Orlando...all groomers, assistants and bathers will be attending.
  6. Dogs sense your possible apprehension.  Beginning a few days ahead of time, speak with enthusiasm that "they are going to the Red Hydrant and will have a special day!"
  7. All groomers are not bad...even with the best of procedures and attention to detail, accidents can happen.

'da HOLIDAZ ARE ALMOST HERE!

'da Holidaz are Almost Here!

Can you believe it? This year is already 3/4 complete and the holiday madness is just around the corner.  Make certain you have your appointments booked so your "fur baby" looks great for all your family's special holidays!

Did you know that we offer bath and brush services?!  This is great in between grooms when you want your dog to look the best!  If you are a regular groom customer, we will include a complimentary nail trim on your bath visit too!

Did you know we sell all of the shampoos and conditioners in the boutique we use on your dog when they are in the spa?  All our products are detergent-free and are veterinarian quality products.

TRICK OR TREAT NO-NO'S!

Trick or Treat No-No's!

Halloween is fun for kids and adults, but can be scary and confusing for pets.  Kids dressed up in scary costumes can frighten your dog and can cause stress.  To product your dog, make sure they are always wearing their collar and ID tag with the name of the dog and your name and phone number.  This will help you find your dog in case they get scared and run away.  If your dog is protective and likes to bark at strangers, put them in your fenced yard or in a room when alla the "ghosts and goblins" arrive.

Lots of people have Halloween parties on or near Halloween.
If dogs will be present, be sure to follow these rules.
  1. Keep ALL food and candy up high on counters or tables and away from pets!
  2. Put any purses up high, not on the floor.
  3. Keep all the usual housecleaning items out of reach.
  4. If any presents are opened, throw away all wrapping paper, ribbons, or bows right away where the dog can't reach them and eat them.
Dogs will be very interested in the candy, the funny masks, wax lips, and fake hair that might be within reach.  Give your dogs some special toys or treats that are good for them so that they don't eat things that are dangerous.

Here are pictures of some of the great Halloween toys and treats now available in the Red Hydrant Boutique!

We also have a complete catalog of special order dog costumes available.  Contact Roman now...quantities are limited!  813.388.6810

If you are thinking about some "low" or "no" cost dog costumes, try one of these ideas:

     Fur Baby                       Hula Dog

Remember that your dog may be tired after a busy day.  Give them their space and a chance to rest.

RED HYDRANT HAS ANTLERS???

Red Hydrant has Antlers!???

Currently one of the HOTTEST selling items in the Boutique are these Naturally-Shed Antler Chews.

These chews are 100% organic, no additives and are naturally shed from deer, elk, and moose that live in the Smokey Mountains of Tennessee.   These are great for both "lite" and "HEAVY" chewers!  Unlike some Antler chews from foreign or unknown origins, these are chemical and pesticide free.  They are also wonderful for your dog's teeth, too!

We have re-ordered 4 times in the past 2 weeks!

SANITATION AT THE RED HYDRANT!

Sanitation at the Red Hydrant!

Even after six years of business, we have customers that walk in to the store and ask if we groom dogs here.  The answer is always the same "of course we do, why do you ask?"  The customer then will respond "it does not smell like a dog in here...it smells so clean."

Let me share with you why.  Even though there is no state or county code or health inspection required, we are insistent upon strict sanitation and have established our own high level of standards.  Each kennel is cleaned and sanitized after each dog.  The tubs are cleaned throughout the day and sanitized at the end of each day.  Each of our 7 grooming tables are also cleaned and sanitized at the end of each day.  We use only 100% all cotton towels to dry your dog.  These towels are also machine washed in hypoallergenic fragrance free detergent and machine heat dried after each use.  Interesting fact...we typically use and wash over 75 towels each day.

Another important issue around sanitation and safety is that our groomers also clean and sanitize their tools daily. These tools are also sent away for maintenance and sharpening on a regular basis.

As in years past, our friends Jeannine and David from Cloud 9 Studios, will pack their lights and camera and "go on location" to the Red Hydrant.  We move everything out of the groom room for the day and set up a photo studio.

Typically spaces book fast so it is important to call and book your appointment TODAY!  You will not want to miss out of this special day.  You will also want to book a "pre-close-up" groom or bath prior to the 16th!   813-388-6180

Lights, camera, ACTION!  See you on the 16th of October!

BE KIND TO SENIOR DOGS!

Be Kind to Senior Dogs!

As the proud owner of two senior dogs, trust me when I say "their needs are different today than they were just a few years ago."  Technically a senior dog is defined as a dog eight years of age or older.

Consequently when it comes to grooming, sometimes the process needs to be customized for their individual needs.  Variables include their inability to stand as long during the drying and grooming process.  It may be in the best interest of the dog to "take a break" in order to make it a more pleasant experience for them.  Obviously, when we block grooming time, the dog will actually determine the length of time it takes to complete the service.

Many owners think it is best to rush and hurry the dog through the appointment in an effort to reduce the time away from home.  In reality it is often the opposite.  Some owners feel that it is easier to go extended periods of time between grooms, when in reality, it is easier and less stressful on the dog for more frequent and shorter visits.

If you have specific questions or issues around your dogs needs, we welcome your call in order to customize the experience for optimal comfort of your dog.

As always, thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to spend a couple of minutes with us. We hope you have enjoyed this issue of BARKS and BYTES and that you found it informative.  We welcome your comments and suggestions and would love to hear from you.

In closing, Roman and I, on behalf of all the staff at the Red Hydrant ,would like to say how honored and grateful we are to have each of you as our client and friend.

ASK THE GROOMER!

Ask the Groomer!

My dog is a MESS!  I'm at my wits end.  Every time I go outside with my dog, we come back into the house a wet mess.  The hair is already short and it still knots up and the ears drag the wet ground.  Please HELP!  What can I do?

What a great and timely question.  Summer in Florida means constant wet grass...either from the sporadic rains or the sprinklers.  I actually have a two-part suggestion:

  1. Train your pet to let you wipe his/her feet each time you enter the house. This will remove most of the moisture from the feet and keep from tracking "the muck" from the yard into the house and only the floors, furniture and dog beds.  Training can be very simple.  Make it a game.  You might want to call it "WET DOG."  Train your dog to stop at the entry of the door and allow you to wipe and towel dry their feet and tummy.  An all cotton towel works better than a blend but there are also some great towel "magnets" or microfiber towels on the market now that literally pull the moisture to the fabric and away from your dog.  Keep the towel handy at the back and remember to praise them for a good walk and allowing you to dry their feet.  Be patient, it takes humans between 21 and 28 days to form a habit.  Your dog will respond to the structure and consistency.
  2. The second part of the recommendation is brushing.  Again, make it a fun time for them.  Every day or two put a towel for traction on the washing machine or patio table.  Let your dog stand while you brush the feet, legs, tummy and underarms.  A little bit each day or two will prevent it from becoming truly matted.  This will also serve as a bonding time between you and your dog.  Enlist assistance from the kids.  This will also make the grooming experience for your dog more familiar and comfortable.

Do we have your current address and phone number?

Over the last six years many of our clients have moved or changed their home or work telephone numbers.  Some have done away with their land line all together and use their cell phone now for all calls.

If you have changed your mailing address or your telephone contact information, PLEASE take a minute and click the link to send Roman an email with all of your updated current information. This will greatly assist us in maintaining current records.

REMODEL UPDATE!

IT IS NOW TIME!

We have been saving for a year and the time has finally come! The new look and back-of-house improvements are about to be a reality.

Most of you have never seen where the bathing and drying actually takes place. We are making huge improvements to that area in order to make it much more efficient for our staff on a daily basis.

We also have plans for some paint throughout the spa and some new lighting in the Boutique area.

So many of you have expressed your excitement regarding this project with us...THANK YOU!

WE ARE SO BLESSED!

We Are So Blessed ~

Over the past few weeks and months, Roman and I have talked at length as to really how blessed the last six years have been for us personally and professionally.

We began our small business built with passion, drive, determination and conviction. We have striven to not only meet our customers' expectations, but to exceed them. As with anything, we have excelled and yet occasionally missed the mark. We have tried to learn from those missed opportunities and continue work diligently to improve each time. Over all, the many notes and letters we receive continue to validate that we are working hard to care for our customers...thank you! Please keep the notes coming!

  • We have seen young puppies grow and mature into beautiful dogs and amazing pets.
  • We have seen Moms drop dogs off for grooming and then take the children to school. Now the children are grown and help Mom by stopping after school to pick up the dog.
  • Clients talk about the fear of losing the dog!  "I have had my dog longer than I have known my husband and have had my children."
  • We have had to say good bye to wonderful owners due to various illnesses but made certain that their dog would be well cared for in their absence.
  • We now have families bringing their second generation pets to us for care and grooming.
  • We have cared for numerous "service dogs" that assist those who are visually impaired or have other special needs.
  • We have also had to say good bye to far too many pets...age, illness and those that move away to other parts of the country. Many of you know, we have cried with you.

Roman and I want you to know how special it has been for us to share with your family the love and excitement of your pets. We would not trade it for all the money in the world!  We are looking forward to all the excitement the next six years will bring!

If you have lost a dog or know of one of our customers that has passed on, you may wish to view the Memorial Page on our website. We have listed the names of those we are aware of. There are also a few very sweet stories posted for reading and sharing.  Here is the link http://theredhydrant.com/athome/memorial.html .

If you know of a Red Hydrant dog that has passed on and would like to have them remembered on our Memorial Page, please send their name in an email to webmaster@theredhydrant.com

As always, thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to spend a couple of minutes with us. We hope you have enjoyed this issue of BARKS and BYTES and that you found it informative.  We welcome your comments and suggestions and would love to hear from you.

REMODEL UPDATE!

Remodel Update!

Plans are moving right on track for our big remodel. Many of you that have been in recently shared your opinion on paint color options. The final decisions have been made. The only thing remaining to select is the track lights for the Boutique area.

COME ON IN THE WATER IS FINE...OR IS IT?

Come on in the water's fine...

or is it?

As a society, we have socialized most all dogs to the point that they are not allowed to perform the basic function that the breed was originally bred to perform. How many Goldens and Labs do you know retrieve the kill from the hunt? How many Australian Shepherds do you know work the herds? How may terriers actually rat for vermin? Some of us actually own water dogs that were bred to interact and have the coat to function in water. But the family Yorkie, Shih Tzu, Maltese or Bichon are not born water dogs.

They were certainly not talking about the chlorinated family swimming pool either. We know how drying to our skin a day in the pool can be. Imagine how irritating it is to the skin of your dog when they don't even rinse the chlorinated water off. The harsh pool chemicals will also strip away the monthly flea and tick preventative making them easy targets for those blood sucking little guys that play hide-n-seek on your dog. We won't even talk about the mats that are created by allowing the coat to get wet and not brushed or combed following the canine audition of water ballet. Remember to check the pool's skimmer basket for extra dog hair, too!

With that being said, it is not uncommon for those of you with swimming pools to occasionally take Fido for a quick weekend dip with the family. Here are a few things to remember:

  • Make sure your dog knows where the steps are...most are not strong enough to pull themselves out from the side.

  • It is important to rinse your dog in fresh water following the swim. The pool water dries the coat and over time will change the color of the coat as well. Aside from previous mentioned hazards, you certainly do not want them licking themselves, as they will do, and getting sick from the chlorine and pool acid.

  • Clean the ears! Wet ears make a great environment for bacteria and "funk" to grow. Ear aches are both painful for the dog and costly for the owner to treat with drops and ointments from the vet.
  • It would be a good idea to look at some animal CPR and first aid. Your Veterinarian and the American Red Cross are good sources for this.

The swimming pool survival kit is simple. Bathe your dog in the Davis Hypoallergenic Shampoo or Davis DeShed Shampoo. It is important to remember to clean their ears well, too. We recommend the Davis Ear Wipes...nothing could be easier!

All three of these items are featured in the Red Hydrant Boutique at a 20% Discount this month!

WHAT I DID ON MY SUMMER VACATION!

What I Did on My Summer Vacation!

I am sure I am showing my age when I remember returning to school each fall and the teacher would ask each of my classmates to share what they did on their summer vacation.

Now when students return to class and are asked to share what they did on summer vacation, they submit Power Point presentations set to music, Facebook pictorials and presentations created on the iPads.

That being said, we would love to know what your "four-legged kids" did this summer, whether it was away on vacation or simply relaxing at home. Please send your picture including the name of your dog and the city and state that the picture was taken. Email your picture and information to webmaster@theredhydrant.com.

Murphy and MacKenzie sent us this picture earlier this summer while in Columbus, TX enjoying the early morning in their x-pen and watching deer come and feed at the nearby campsite.

WHEN TRAVELING THIS SUMMER...

REMEMBER TO BUCKLE UP!

When traveling this summer,

remember to buckle up!

Each time you get into your automobile, I am sure you buckle your seat belt. If you have a young child, I am sure you also strap him/her into an approved car seat before driving away. After all, it is the law!

As pet owners we should think about the safety of our pets when we travel in the car, too. Presently, the state of Florida does not have any laws on the books regarding the restraint of a pet while driving. There are a few states that already have such laws and based on history with regards to pets, Florida will follow in a few shot years.

Are you aware there are very affordable car seats for your dog? They quickly buckle in the seat and then the dog is simply snapped in similar to a leash or harness. Another option is to use a small collapsible nylon kennel and secure the kennel in the back seat or the cargo area of an SUV.

Real hazards are when drivers hold their pet in their lap while driving. If involved in a collision, your pet could become an airborne missile, straight through the windshield or side window. Most of our cars are equipped with front and side airbags. They deploy at 200 plus mph. This would crush your pet well before you had time to protect it.

At the Red Hydrant we have  some car seats available starting at only $60.00. We can also special order you a soft kennel in your favorite color!

A version of this article ran last year, but we felt with the many customer satisfaction comments and endorsements regarding their success and the peace of mind they now have with a car safety seat, we decided to repeat this important information.

REMODELING SALE!

After Six Years...
Red Hydrant is Remodeling!

It seems like only yesterday that Roman and I were looking for space in which to open our dream and passion...the Red Hydrant Pet Spa and Boutique.  In reality, we opened this location in 2005 almost six years ago.

During the past six years, the local and world economies have "fluctuated" up and down several times.  Gratefully, dogs seeking grooming have been relatively constant and most importantly loyal customers like you have remained unwavering.  We still have many of our first 100 clients.  We consider ourselves to be most blessed.

The reality is that we have out grown our location in its current configuration.  Over the past 12 months we have spoken with numerous agents regarding the possibility of remaining in the neighborhood, and physically relocating our store.  Some centers were very eager to offer us space and even offered incentives to move to their location.  Typically it was not a great location.  Other locations that were available were not real interested in leasing to pet related tenants; they would rather have empty space.  None of these options seemed like a great fit.

What we have opted to do is re-model and reconfigure our existing location to better meet and exceed the expectations of our existing customers.  Our remodel project will begin July 1 and should not take more than 45 days.  We have personal experience with the contractor that is managing this project for us, so we feel his estimate is realistic.  Mike and his team will predominately be working after hours and on weekends to ensure no interruption of service.  Repeat...THERE WILL BE NO INTERRUPTION OF SERVICE!

In preparation of the remodel, we will however, temporarily be reducing our Boutique inventory.  We will be marking down items instead of packing and storing them during the remodel. Obviously, there are some great deals to be had!  Some items are already marked down by 80%.  You will want to shop early while selections are the best.  Of course special order options are still available too!

Stay tuned for remodel updates and some great new things coming in August!

GOT HOT SPOTS?

Got Hot Spots?

Save 20% on Hot Spot Remedy!

Our friends at WebMD define "hot spots" in the following way:

Acute Moist Dermatitis (Hot Spots) in Dogs.

A hot spot is a warm, painful, swollen patch of skin 1 to 4 inches (2.5 to 10 cm) across that exudes pus and gives off a foul odor. Hair in the area is lost rapidly. The infection progresses when the dog licks and chews the site. These circular patches appear suddenly and enlarge quickly, often within a matter of hours.

Hot spots can occur anywhere on the body, often in more than one spot. One very typical location is under the ear flaps. Hot spots occur most often in breeds with heavy coats, and tend to appear just before shedding, when moist, dead hair is trapped next to the skin. Fleas, mites, and other skin parasites, skin allergies, irritant skin diseases, ear and anal gland infections, and neglected grooming are other factors that can initiate the itch-scratch-itch cycle.

Treatment: Chlorhexidine shampoo and sprays are the most common solution.  Oral antibiotics are sometimes prescribed by Veterinarians. Predisposing skin problems must be treated as well.  Hot spots can be extremely painful.

In hot, humid weather, always be sure to dry your heavy-coated dog thoroughly after bathing her and after she swims. Otherwise, the conditions are perfect for a hot spot to develop.

Davis Manufacturing Veterinarian Product company are makers of amazing veterinarian quality grooming products that are used and sold at the Red Hydrant.  We stand behind these products unconditionally and have numerous testimonials of their incredible success.

The  convenient and non-stinging 4% Chlorhexidine Spray can be applied directly where it's needed for localized relief of hot spots, inflamed skin and insect bites.  The Chlorhexidine Shampoo is also a wonderful way to cleanse and eliminate surface bacteria when bathing your pet.  Both of these products are safe for both canine and feline.

This shampoo treatment is available to all Red Hydrant Spa Clients for a nominal up charge on any bath or grooming service.  These products are also available for purchase in the Boutique and this month, they are promotionally priced at a 20% Savings!

Feel free to contact the Red Hydrant for questions at 813.388.6810.

VACATION TIME

PET SITTER vs BOARDING!

Vacation Time

Pet Sitter vs Boarding!

It is almost summer and that means summer vacations, weekend weddings out of state, last minute get-a-ways and of course the last minute business trip.  As fun as all of this can be, it also can pose a huge dilemma when the topic of how to care for the family pet arises.

You have four basic options:

  • Hire a Pet Sitter
  • Place your dog at a boarding facility
  • Take the dog with you
  • Opt not to go and stay at home.

Each of these options can have merit depending on the specific needs of the individual.  No one can state which option is best for you.  It becomes personal and has many variables.  The following options are listed below with various questions and statements which are in no particular order of importance.

If you opt to hire a Pet Sitter, here are a few things that you will want to check on:

  • Are they licensed and insured?
  • Do they have good references?
  • Does your dog like them?  Insist on a home visit!  Try a dog walking session or two prior to booking an entire week.
  • Is there a written agreement or contract?
  • Ask them to share what makes their business unique and why  should you  select their service over that of another sitter..
  • Always leave an extra day or two of food in case of unforeseen travel delays.
  • Notify your Vet that the Pet Sitter will be caring for your pets in your absence.
  • Will the pet sitter that you meet with be the only one providing care for your dog?
  • Do they have back up if they become ill?

If you opt for boarding, think about the following:

  • You want to personally see where your dog will stay, sleep and play!  This is not the time for brochures.  If the owner or manager is hesitant about allowing you to personally see the area, what are they hiding?
  • Ask for references.
  • Ask about optional services such as daily brushing to ensure that your dog will not be matted upon your return.
  • If your dog has never been boarded at that facility before, try a single day of Day care first to see how your dog likes the experience.
  • How do they handle administration of special medications or food?
  • Make certain that your dog has flea and tick preventative.
  • Inquire how they handle flea and tick prevention within their facility.
  • How do they handle medical emergencies?
  • Is it clean or does it smell?
  • Is there anyone on the property after hours or on weekends?
  • What is the Pet to staff ratio?
  • Depending on the length of your stay, do they allow your pet to have visitors?

If you opt to take your dog with you:

  • Make certain that you take all the medications and foods as well as written proof of vaccinations with you?  Some hotels, RV parks and resorts require this.
  • Remember to bring your Vet's name and telephone number in the event of emergency.
  • Have you booked your hotel stays at known "pet friendly" hotels?
  • Do you have proper safety features available for your pet in your car?  Travel kennel, car seat or restraint system?

If you opt not to go and to stay at home:

  • Book a day at the spa for both you and your pet!

DOGGY PARK ETIQUETTE!

Doggy Park Etiquette!

With the beautiful spring and summer season upon us, doggy parks are a great way to allow your entire family and your dog a special bonding activity while enjoying the beautiful weather...and typically FREE OF CHARGE!

There are "certain expectations" of you and your pet while visiting a doggy park.

"Off-leash" dog parks are a wonderful recreational outlet for dogs all over the world. The opportunity to run and play with other dogs in a securely fenced environment is a valuable tool in their social development. Unfortunately, not every dog park is filled with responsible owners, and as in most things, a few unmannerly people can ruin the whole experience for most. Make sure you're not one of those humans by following these basic etiquette tips for "bark parks".

  • Clean Up After Your Dog: To prevent the unintentional spreading of disease and intestinal parasites, pick up after your dog. Leaving piles for other dog owners to clean up is unforgivably rude and could result in your being fined, and you and your dog being banned from the park.  It is nice to share, so always take an extra bag with you.  You may even want to tie one to the gate when you leave just in case the next attendee comes empty handed!

  • Immunized Dogs Only:  Don't bring your unvaccinated dog or puppy into a park full of other dogs. It's just asking for the rapid spread of disease, some that could be fatal, especially to young puppies. Most parks will prohibit the entry of puppies younger than four months as well, the common age when the full range of puppy vaccines has been given.

  • Bring a Healthy Dog: Don't bring your sick dog to a dog park!  It's just common sense but it's amazing how many people will bring a dog that's currently suffering from kennel cough, or has fleas, or mange, or other health problems.

  • Follow The Posted Rules: Following each park's individually posted rules and regulations will help keep dog parks open and available to all dogs. Failure to obey the rules can result in your local park being shut down, or worse, cause a serious accident that could have been prevented.

  • Human Children at Off-Leash Dog Parks: There are many good reasons to keep children out of off-leash dog parks, and no good reasons to bring them in. The possibilities for accidents are staggering. Be a responsible parent, and keep your small children in the parks designed for them.

  • Female Dogs in Heat: Taking a female dog in heat out in public is unbelievably irresponsible, especially out somewhere where there are dozens of dogs running loose, with many possibly unneutered males.

  • Don't Bring Too Many Dogs: Many parks will have a posted limit on the number of dogs one person can bring into a dog park. It's really best not to bring more dogs than you can handle, even if that number is less than the allowable limit.

  • Don't Bring Other Animals That Are Not Dogs: For the safety of all concerned do not bring animals other than dogs to a dog park.

  • Be Responsible For Your Dog's Behavior: If your dog digs a hole, be responsible, and fill it back in. If he cannot play nicely with other dogs on that day, then take him home.

Many homeowners associations have areas exclusive for their residents.  There are many city and county dog parks in our area and are easy to find while traveling.  If you are unfamiliar, ask your neighbors and check the internet.

CLEAN EARS LIKE A PRO!

 Clean Ears Like A Pro!

Now you can clean ears at home just like we do in the Red Hydrant Spa.  Davis Veterinary brand EarMed Wipes are the Best!  It is easy and important to your dog's health.  Clean ears are healthy ears, and vets and groomers both know regular ear cleaning not only keeps pets happy but helps to eliminate yeast and bacterial ear infections.  The wipes are pre-moistened with a gentle cleansing solution, making it easy to simply wipe away dirt, excess ear wax, dead tissue and odor-causing discharge.  Safe enough to use daily, but powerful enough to get the job done.  Hint...they can also be used when expressing anal glands at home.  Safe for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens alike!

More Itchy Scratchy Season

for Your Pet and

  20% Discount off Shampoo!

We had a HUGE response to this article last month and we are getting so many daily questions regarding "itchy and scratchy" that we decided to run this article again AND continue the discount!

It is that time of the year again.  Dogs are scratching!  Just as you and I suffer from seasonal allergies, the pollen affects your pets, too!  What is an owner to do?

One of the best things to do currently is bathe your dog.  Just as your car, lawn and plants are covered with a fine film of pollen...that same pollen is on your dog.  They walk in the lawn, on the sidewalks and under the trees.

You can call the Spa to book an appointment for a cleansing bath or  the Red Hydrant has an at home solution:  HOME BATH!

We are recommending the following shampoos for the "itchy scratchy" allergy baths.  Each of these Shampoos is regularly priced at $11.95 but again for the month of April, you will enjoy a 20% Discount on these three products and will only be $9.56 each!  This is a great way to save money!

  • DESHED SHAMPOO - helps to offer deep cleaning while helping to loosen and remove excess dead coat.
  • OATMEAL and ALOE SHAMPOO - Helps to calm and soothe irritated skin.
  • MELALEUCA SHAMPOO - The Melaleuca plant is indigenous to the Florida Keys.  It offers deep cleansing and helps kill surface bacteria that causes skin irritation.

Feel free to contact the Red Hydrant for questions at 813.388.6810.

As always, thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to spend a couple of minutes with us. We hope you have enjoyed this issue of BARKS and BYTES and that you found it informative.  We welcome your comments and suggestions and would love to hear from you.

RABIES VACCINATION ALERT!

Rabies Vaccination Alert!

The Red Hydrant Pet Spa and Boutique is proud of its commitment and 100% adherence that each and every client has proof of current rabies vaccination on record.  As you will read, this is not just our policy...IT IS THE LAW!

The Florida Legislature mandates that all dogs, cats and ferrets be kept vaccinated against rabies to protect the public health.  Rabies is a fatal viral disease of the central nervous system that can be transmitted between or among different species of mammals. Rabies laws are implemented to decrease the prevalence and transmission of this deadly disease, which is constantly present in Florida wildlife populations.

By law, rabies vaccines must be administered by a licensed veterinarian to all domesticated dogs, cats and ferrets over 4 months old. Your pet is not required to be vaccinated against rabies if a veterinarian has declared in writing that the vaccine could jeopardize your pet's health.

Animals must be vaccinated with a rabies vaccine that is approved by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The dog, cat or ferret receive an additional rabies vaccination 12 months after a first vaccination, and must be vaccinated afterward according to the manufacturer's instructions. This generally is once a year.

Pets must have their vaccinations kept current. It is the owner's obligation to pay for their pet to be vaccinated at the required intervals. Your pet is not required to wear a rabies tag, but you must possess the required documentation. Failure to comply with vaccination laws is considered a violation of Florida civil law.

The Red Hydrant suggests that you follow your veterinarian recommendations for all vaccinations and treatments.  When you receive rabies vaccinations for your pet, ASK THEM TO FAX A COPY TO THE RED HYDRANT...813.388.6808.

ITCHY SCRATCHY SEASON FOR YOUR PET and

20% DISCOUNT OFF SHAMPOO!!

Itchy Scratchy Season

for Your Pet and

  20% Discount off Shampoo!

Each of these Shampoos is regularly priced at $11.95 but for the month of March, you will enjoy a 20% Discount on these three products and will only be $9.56 each!

IS YOUR DOG THE BIGGEST LOSER?

Is Your Dog the Biggest  Loser?

Did you know that your dog might be overweight?  I am sure that you are familiar with NBC's hit reality series The Biggest Loser.  Bob and Jillian push contestants to exercise while watching their food intake.  They encourage portion control and healthy choices.  One excess pound on your dog is equal to about ten excess pounds for humans.  Yikes!

Healthy, natural and organic diets are often considered preferred.  These types of foods typically are filled with more proteins, vegetables and less filler.  Consequently you use less food, which relates to financial savings as well as huge health benefits.  You should also only feed the quantity prescribed for your dog's size and activity level.

More healthy snacks and treats are a weight loss benefit for you and I as well as our pets.  That is why for the month of March, the Red Hydrant Boutique is proud to offer a 20% Discount of all Cloud Star Low Fat Treats.

The options and flavors are extensive:

  • Soft and Chewy Treats in Lamb, Duck, Peanut Butter and Sweet Potato flavors
  • Itty Bitty Treats in Roasted Chicken, Sweet Potato, Bacon and Cheese flavors
  • Tricky Trainers in both Salmon and Cheddar Cheese flavors
  • Biscuits with Benefits SHAPE UPS - Chicken Flavor

Feel free to ask for further details when in the store or call 813.388.6810.

TOP TEN PET TOXINS OF 2010!

Top Ten Pet Toxins of 2010!

Both known and unknown toxins can be found hiding in our houses and yards. In 2010, the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) in Urbana, IL, fielded more than 167,000 phone calls about pets exposed to possibly poisonous substances.

Human Medications

Human medications are once again at the top of the list of pet toxins for 2010. Almost 25 percent of our calls concerned human medications accidentally ingested by pets. The most common culprits include over-the-counter medications (ibuprofen, acetaminophen), antidepressants and ADHD medications.

Insecticides

About 20% of the calls to the APCC are about insecticides. Insecticides are commonly used on our pets for flea control and around our houses to control crawling and flying bugs. The most serious poisonings occurred when products not labeled for use in cats were applied to them. Always follow label directions.

Rodenticides

Baits used to kill mice and rats are mostly grain based. Not only does this attract rodents, but it attracts dogs and cats. There are several different types of rodenticides that can cause seizures, internal bleeding or kidney failure. Always make sure these items are placed in areas that pets cannot access.

People Food

Xylitol, grapes, raisins, onions and garlic are commonly ingested by our pets. Grapes and raisins can cause kidney failure in dogs, while onions and garlic can cause anemia if enough is ingested. Xylitol, a sugar alcohol used to sweeten sugar free gums and mints, can cause low blood sugar and liver failure in dogs.

Veterinary Medications

Many medications made for our pets are flavored for ease of giving. Unfortunately, that means that animals may ingest the entire bottle of medication if they find it tasty. Common chewable medications include arthritis and incontinence medications. Contact your veterinarian if your pet ingests more than his proper dose of medication.

Chocolate

Chocolate contains methylxanthines, which act as stimulants to our pets. The darker the chocolate, the more methylxanthines it contains. Methylxanthines can cause agitation, vomiting, diarrhea, high heart rate, muscle tremors, seizures and death.

Household Toxins

Cleaning supplies, such as bleach, acids, alkalis and other detergents, can cause corrosive injury to the mouth and stomach. Other household items such as batteries and liquid potpourri can cause similar problems. Always keep these toxins behind securely locked doors.

Plants

Both house plants and outdoor plants can be ingested by our pets. Lilies can cause life-threatening kidney failure in cats, while sago palms can cause liver failure in dogs and cats. Keep house plants and bouquets away from your pets.

Herbicides

Many herbicides have a salty taste, and our pets will commonly ingest them. Always follow label directions and keep pets off treated areas until they are dry.

Outdoor Toxins

Antifreeze, fertilizers and ice melts are all substances that animals can find outdoors. Keep these items in securely locked sheds or on high shelves where pets cannot get to them.

If you have any reason to suspect your pet has ingested something toxic, please contact your veterinarian or the Animal Poison Control Center's 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435.

 Red Hydrant Alert!

I wanted to clarify that you did NOT miss Barks & Bytes in January.  As working owner, I am sure that you know that some weeks and months just do not have enough hours.  To accommodate client needs, we worked almost 60 additional hours in Late November and December.  In our "free" time we were busy preparing and filing all of the monthly, quarterly and annual State and Federal reports and returns.

As tradition also holds, Roman and I close the business only one week a year.  We usually select one of the middle weeks in January.  All of our staff has worked so hard to ensure clean fluffy dogs are home during the Holidays.  Last year, although closed, we were in Chicago for a funeral.  However, this year, we took a week and went on a cruise.  With the assistance of Land O Lakes Travel, we had an amazing trip in which we sailed from San Juan on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas.  We made stops in Barbados, St. Maarten, St John's, St. Croix, and Antigua.

We are back and all I will share with you today is that there are some amazing and exciting things happening at the Red Hydrant in 2011!

Happy 3-Year Anniversary, Sheryl!

Happy 3-Year Anniversary, Sheryl!

It seems like only a few weeks ago that Sheryl, who was already a Red Hydrant customer, made it very clear that "If you guys are ever interested in hiring a receptionist, I would LOVE to do it."

Roman and I were always drawn to her southern charm, calm manner, effervescent and infectious smile!

The last three years has been a fast and ever-changing time.  Sheryl jokes that there are "no two days alike."  "I love seeing the dogs come into the shop and leave looking so beautiful a few hours later."

Sheryl wears many hats at the Red Hydrant: she books appointments, confirms appointments, verifies current vaccination information, educates clients about the many services and product offerings, and assists with housekeeping projects in the front of the house.  On the Spa side she supports the pets with occasional "TLC" as needed when a new client gets scared or nervous.  However, one of the things that Roman and I feel she does the best is greet and welcome every client to the Red Hydrant as if the store were her own!

So the next time you hear her cheery voice over the phone or when she runs to hug your pet, please take a minute and say THANK YOU for all the many great things she does.

February...National Dental Health Month!

February is National Dental Health Month!

February is National Dental Month and it is one of the biggest opportunities for you and your family to educate yourselves about good, healthy dental care for your pet.  I have enclosed two excerpts from American Veterinary Dental Society.

1)    "At any one time, 80% of all dogs and 70% of all cats show signs of dental and oral health diseases. Regular dental care can add as much as five years to a pet's life."

2)    How is the rest of the body affected by bad teeth?
Infected gums and teeth aren't just a problem in the mouth -- the heart, kidneys, intestinal tract, and joints may also be infected. The tartar and any infected areas of the mouth contain a multitude of bacteria than can 'seed' to other parts of the body. With regular dental care, you can prevent some of these more serious side effects.

Many of our customers are familiar with the AMAZING PlaqClnz Treatment that the Red Hydrant has carried and endorsed for two years now.

Here is how simple it is....AND IT WORKS!

Part I - This is performed at the Red Hydrant Pet Spa in conjunction with one of their regularly scheduled appointments.  It only adds about 30 minutes to the length of the spa service.

When your pet comes into the Red Hydrant for a bath or Groom, we do the following:

Part II - This is done at home.   SIMPLE, but highly EFFECTIVE!  Once a day, typically at night prior to bed, place a drop about the size of a pea of the PlaqClenz Gel on your finger and simply wipe over gum and teeth line.  Add a second drop about the size of a pea for the other side and you are all complete for another day!

There is no taste or flavor for the dog to fight or to cause an adverse reaction.

The price of the service is $18.00 and the price of the Gel at Home Treatment, is typically $22.00.  However, this is National Dental Month and we will GIVE you a pre-pasted disposable toothbrush with your PlaqClnz service in February and we will also DISCOUNT the price of the Gel 20%, making the total only $17.60.  Remember, that is probably enough Gel to last you 2 ½ to 3 months.  What a great value!

We have in-store promotions about this product and service, but we also have a complimentary manufacturer's brochure for your review, too!

RESCUE ME ... Part 3 in the series

RESCUE ME...PART III -- FOSTER PARENT

As you will remember, we have discussed and identified what a rescue dog is, how many there are available and some of the pros and cons for your family.

I wanted to share a little about a VERY important niche...Fostering a Dog.  The economic struggles are apparent all over our great country.  For whatever reasons, dogs may need to be placed in new homes.  In an effort to reduce the exorbitant cost of running a shelter, often times it is easier and better for the dog to transition into a Foster Home while verifying his/her "forever home" instead of the animal control environment.

Sometimes these transitional dogs might also need a bit of special attention.  Possibly they may never have been spayed or neutered and as we all know, we tend to heal faster and with less stress at home rather than in a hospital or animal shelter.  They might have had to undergo some surgery and need special TLC while they are recovering.  The dog may need to still become masterful at going outside to urinate.

Five Commonly Asked Questions about Fostering Dogs:

1)    How many dogs would I have to foster?

You may take in as many dogs or as few as you wish. Even fostering one dog would help a great deal

2)    Do I get to choose which dog I foster?

Most organizations will work diligently to try to match the foster dog to the home it will be going to. If you require a particular size, or if you need a dog who is good with children or other pets, most will be sure to meet your criteria.

3)    How much will it cost to foster a dog?

This varies somewhat, but most of the time, the foster parent is responsible for predominantly food, water and shelter.  Veterinary care and medications are typically paid by the agency.

4)    How long does it take for a dog to get adopted?

No one knows how long a particular dog will be in your home. On average, it takes between a week and a month for a dog to find a permanent home. A dog recovering from health problems may take a bit longer than a healthy dog

5)    Will I be involved in choosing the dog's new owner?

Foster homes are often the best judge of what kind of home is the best fit for their foster dog's particular needs. Typically you will be involved in the screening process of potential adopters, in order to find the best home for the dog

There is a great agency here is the area that I would encourage you to contact and discuss with them further how you and your family can help.  Heidi's Legacy Dog Rescue.  813.737.1795.  Feel free to visit her website at

Ask the Groomer

ASK THE GROOMER

Typically I share with you a question or topic that is commonly asked by clients at the Red Hydrant.  However, this month, I wanted to share a recent and amazing "Question and Answer" session.

Each year I am asked to participate in "The Great American Teach-In" at one of the local schools.  I have always participated with one of the Pasco schools until this year when I was asked by one of our teacher-clients to come to Cleveland Elementary in Hillsborough.  I was booked with six sessions of 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th graders on Thursday, November the 18th.  I took my friend "Frosty," a handsome white Bichon Frise, as my assistant.  He and I spoke briefly about what we do at the Red Hydrant during a grooming appointment.  As in years past, the toothbrush, nail trimmer and bath massager were the most talked about props I brought.

We also discussed the importance of dog collars, name tags, leash laws and how to approach a strange dog.  You can also imagine the "euuuuuwh's" when we talked about how to "scoop poop" with a grocery bag.  At the end of each session the children were given the opportunity to say good-bye to Frosty and give him a brief "rub and hug."

One of my highlights was when a young girl cried that she was scared of dogs because she had previously been bitten by a dog and in a few short moments with the coaching of the teacher, she was petting Frosty with two hands and he even gave her a big good-bye kiss.

I was told that all the children had a good time, but I think I was the one receiving the gift!  If you are ever given the opportunity to volunteer and help at our local schools, I would encourage you to jump at the opportunity if at all possible.  These children really are the future of tomorrow.  I cannot think of a better investment.

RESCUE ME ... Part 2 in the series

Pictured here are two of my friends, Hannah and Lulu, that both came from "Sunshine Airedalers of Florida".  Roman and I recently attended a recent "romp" and fundraiser.  Just imagine 20 Airedales running and playing together...it was beautiful!

We hear so much today about "puppy mills", shelters and rescue organizations; I wanted to explain briefly the differences.

A Few Facts about Puppy Mills:
  • Puppy mills usually house dogs in overcrowded and often unsanitary conditions, without adequate health care, food, water or human company.  They are almost never allowed out. They never touch solid ground or grass to run and play.
  • Puppy mills often generate health problems for the dogs they are selling. The puppies may have immediate health problems such as respiratory infections or pneumonia and some even have genetic diseases that show up years later.
  • Breeding dogs suffer continuously, imprisoned in small cramped cages, often soiled with their own excrement, breeding litter after litter till they can no longer reproduce.
  • The average puppy mill has between 65 and 75 animals housed in hutch-style cages with wire floors. The waste drops to the ground below and accumulates beneath the cage where flies and other gross things fester.
  • Dogs at puppy mills are often not actually purebred, and the breeders sometimes lie about lineage records.
  • Puppy mills often sell puppies at six weeks of age even though federal laws prohibit licensed mills from selling puppies less than eight weeks of age.
  • Female dogs are usually bred the first time they come into heat and are bred every heat cycle. They are bred until their poor worn out bodies can't reproduce any longer and then they are killed. Often they are killed or then dumped at shelters. Sometimes they are sold to laboratories or dumped. This is often by the time they reach five years old.
  • Innocent families buy the puppies only to find that the puppy is very ill or has genetic or emotional problems. Often the puppies die of disease. Many others have medical problems that cost thousands of dollars. And many have emotional problems because they have not been properly socialized in the mills.
  • Some Pet stores and retailers often tell customers that their puppies come from local breeders or quality breeders. Don't believe them, insist on seeing the paperwork and find out where the puppies really come from.  Do your homework!
  • Some puppy mills are local "backyard" breeders, too.

A  Few Facts about Shelters:

Locally - Here in Pasco County - Each year, more than 10,000 dogs and cats will end up at the Pasco County Animal Shelter. Some are lost and have no tags to identify them. Some are strays picked up from the streets. Most are the result of unplanned litters. Eight out of ten of them may never find homes and may have to be put to sleep. These statistics are alarming. The real tragedy is that most of this could be avoided if all pet owners would do two things:
  1. Obtain a county license for your pet and put it on your pet. Without tags your pet is just another stray.
  2. Spay or neuter your pet. By doing so, your pet will have a healthier life. You will have the satisfaction of knowing that this simple procedure helped reduce the number of animals that may be euthanized.
National Statistics:
  • There are currently between 4 and 6 million homeless pets that are in need of a home in America.
  • Approximately 8-12 million companion animals enter animal shelters nationwide every year and approximately 5-9 million are euthanized (60% of dogs and 70% of cats). Shelter intakes are about evenly divided between those relinquished by owners and those picked up by animal control. These are national estimates; the percentage of euthanasia may vary from state to state.
  • Less than 2 percent of cats and only 15-20% of dogs are returned to their owners.** Most of these were identified with tags, tattoos or microchips.
  • 25% of dogs that enter local shelters are purebred.**
  • Only 10% of the animals received by shelters have been spayed or neutered.
  • There is not one national regulatory organization that oversees the operation or consistency of Animal Shelters.  Local SPCAs and Humane Societies must operate and interact independently and amongst themselves.
  • There are No-Kill Shelters; ones that will not euthanize animals...these shelters are over run with animals and the economics of maintaining them is obviously huge!  The internet is the best place for a directory of No-Kill Shelters.
** Source: The National Council on Pet Population Study and Policy (NCPPSP)

Facts about Rescue Organizations:
  • Almost each one of them is different and unique, yet provides essential and valuable assistance to local communities.
  • Many rescue organizations are also breed specific.
There are various local rescue organizations that all have wonderful pets that need loving homes.  Typically the adoption process is similar.

First you make application with the organization.  This will include information about your lifestyle and the living environment available for the pet.

Secondly there is often a home visit.  Given the stories that exist in the news daily, rescue organizations typically take a little extra time to help ensure a good fit with family and pet.  Obviously some adoptable pets are better suited to individuals or families with children and some without.  Sometimes pets are best placed in homes where they will be the only pet and sometimes it is a good fit with other pets.

Third; a nominal fee.  The adoption fees of course vary among organizations and groups, but are typically in the $100.00 to $300.00 range.  This fee also typically ensures the pet is spayed or neutered and has had a complete veterinary evaluation.  Sometimes due to previous circumstances there are medical conditions that exist and rescue organizations typically want to fully disclose to help ensure the new "forever" home is able to care for any special needs.

Listed are only some of the many great organizations locally in the bay area that provide an invaluable service.  A $5.00 donation would also be a huge assistance to most of them.

RESCUE ME ... Part 1 in the series

I RESCUED A HUMAN TODAY.  Her eyes met mine as she walked down the corridor peering apprehensively into the kennels.  I felt her need instantly and knew I had to help her.  I wagged my tail, not too exuberantly, so she wouldn't be afraid.

As she stopped at my kennel I blocked her view from a little accident I had in the back of my cage.  I didn't want her to know that I hadn't been walked today.  Sometimes the shelter keepers get too busy and I didn't want her to think poorly of them.

As she read my kennel card I hoped that she wouldn't feel sad about my past.  I only have the future to look forward to and want to make a difference in someone's life.

She got down on her knees and made little kissy sounds at me.  I shoved my shoulder and side of my head up against the bars to comfort her. Gentle fingertips caressed my neck; she was desperate for companionship.

A tear fell down her cheek and I raised my paw to assure her that all would be well.  Soon my kennel door opened and her smile was so bright that I instantly jumped into her arms.  I would promise to keep her safe.  I would promise to always be by her side. I would promise to do everything I could to see that radiant smile and sparkle in her eyes.  I was so fortunate that she came down my corridor.  So many more are out there who haven't walked the corridors.  So many more to be saved...

At least I could save one.  I rescued a human today.

The next two issues of Barks & Bytes will share about some of the local organizations that provide assistance and homes for un-wanted pets...many on the verge of euthanasia.  At the Red Hydrant, we actually care for many of these dogs and they are amazing pets for their new "for-ever" families.  I will be profiling a few of both the organizations as well as some of these pets.  I will also give you various opportunities to help.  Stay tuned...this promises to be a great series.

ASK THE GROOMER

A frequently heard statement is "I trimmed just a little bit when I bathed her and now it is really short and uneven around the face...What can we do?" or "there were a few matts and I just cut them out."

What you don't know is that the dog is now missing one eyebrow and missing is a huge chunk of hair from the face, and the top of the head is as short as the hind end.

We refer to this type of accident as "KB...KITCHEN BEAUTICIAN". The solution is very simple...even it up and let it grow.  We are talented and experienced groomers, but not magicians.  Furthermore, we do not do extensions.

If the hair is in your dogs' eyes, PLEASE DO NOT USE THE KITCHEN SCISSORS TO TRIM HIS FACE.  We have also heard about the trips to the Vet the owners have won by attempting home grooming.  As a reminder, this does not make your dog very comfortable or calm for us, when we go to trim the face the next time.  It often requires additional assistance to trim the face and head of a traumatically scared little pup.  Please call and book regular appointments for your dog and this "home grooming - grow out process" will not be necessary.

She is a former hair dresser. Angie shifted her stylist skills and attended grooming school.  She is continuing her studies and preparing for her Master Groomer Certification from the National Dog Groomers Association of America.  Angie and Martin are both alumni of the same grooming academy.

She competes with her poodle, Mia, who is not only her grooming model, but is working on achieving AKC Champion status as well.  As a competition groomer, she travels around the country to compete in various dog shows.  The Red Hydrant is very fortunate to have a young woman of her skills working with us.

Please say hello the next time you are in the store.

ITCHY AND SCRATCHY

ITCHY AND SCRATCHY

Itchy and scratchy are terms we hear daily at the Red Hydrant when owners share with us the update on their dog since the last groom.  "He was great for a few weeks and now he just seems to scratch all the time."  This issue is usually often complex and no one single item can create resolution.  But here are a few things to be aware of:

1)    Does your dog have fleas or ticks?

2)    Do you bathe your dog at home between grooming?

3)    Is your dog allergic to wheat or grain?

Possible Solutions:
  • Remember the monthly flea and tick preventative.  Wheather oral or topical, it is important to use regularly.
  • Know what you are using on your dog when you bathe him.  Human products are a NO-NO!  Much too harsh.  FYI...we sell ALL of the products we use in the spa for at home use.  They are all detergent-free and will not harm your pet even when used weekly!  The cost is also usually a lot less than what you buy at the box stores.
  • When you bathe at home remember to rinse, rinse and rinse.
  • Dry your dog at home too...do not let them lie around or nap on the lanai to dry.  This is a breeding ground for fungus and bacteria.
  • Try a natural or certified organic diet.  Surprisingly, many dogs have an allergy to wheat and corn; hence Lamb and Rice formulations will sometimes aid in reduced skin issues.  Be aware that a change in food could take 60 to 120 days to show its benefits.
Another suggestion and option is an all-natural supplement...COCONUT OIL and COCONUT CHIPS.   Many of our customers and staff have tried and enjoy the benefits of Coconut Oil and Coconut Chips (treats).  Both of these items are certified organic and when used regularly have proven benefits:
  • Clears up skin conditions such as eczema, flea allergies, dermatitis and itchy skin.
  • Makes coat sleek and glossy
  • Deodorizes "doggy" odor
  • Aids in reducing bad breath
  • Aids in the balancing of the natural insulin and thyroid levels
  • Speeds healing of cuts, wounds, hot spots, bites and stings when used topically
  • Also helps with arthritis and ligament problems.
  • Elevates metabolism and provides a high level of energy.

Please speak with one of our staff members and we will be glad to share in greater detail the many benefits of Coconut Oil and we'll even give you a sample to try at home.

AUTOMOBILE SAFETY FOR YOUR PET

Ask the Groomer

AUTOMOBILE SAFETY FOR YOUR PET

Each time you get into your automobile, I am sure you buckle your safety belt.  If you have a young child, I am sure you also strap him/her into an approved car seat before driving away.  After all it is the law!

As pet owners we should think about the safety of our pets when we travel in the car, too.  Presently, the state of Florida does not have any laws on the books regarding the restraint of a pet while driving.  There are a few states that already have such laws and based on history with regards to pets, Florida will follow in a few short years.

With the holidays upon us, take the time to drive as defensively as possible and that means not with your dog in your lap!

At the Red Hydrant we have some car seats available starting at only $40.00.  We can also special order you a soft kennel in your favorite color!

Ask the Groomer!

Ask the Groomer...

Another "asked everyday question" from our customers is "Wow...baby looks great.  How often should he/she be groomed?"

Obviously that is a difficult question to answer without referring to a specific dog.  I can tell you that a drop coated (Shih Tzu, Yorkie or Maltese) or curly coated (Poodle, Bichon or Multi-Poo) dog typically needs to be professionally groomed more frequently than a short coated dog (Pug or Beagle).

At the Red Hydrant, our pricing structure is based on certain cycles or visits.  For example:
prices for Shih Tzus, Yorkies and Maltese are based on the fact that your dog is matt-free and groomed approximately every 6 weeks.  Obviously, some specific dogs require shorter intervals and some can comfortably go a week or two longer.  The average is about 6 weeks.  If your pet has not been groomed in 90 days, which is about twice the average time since the last groom, it goes without saying that it will take longer and be more expensive.  Simply put, we cannot deliver the same level of service on two like breeds when one is groomed every 6 weeks and the other every 12 weeks.  The 12 weeks dog has twice the coat to bathe and dry and then trim back to preferred length, but also the dog is not in the habit or practice of standing for nail trims and the drying process.  If that is the case, your pet will likely benefit from a rest break.  Bottom line, it will take longer time and cost more money.

A pet that requires special needs or assistance, maybe a second person to hold the dog while drying or grooming due to inability to stand on its own, is also subject to an additional surcharge.

As a rule, it takes about a week to get a grooming appointment at the Red Hydrant.  We work hard to schedule appointments and stagger them throughout the day.  This way you and your pet are not separated any longer than necessary.  If you prefer a particular day of the week or time of the day, remember that we will gladly make a standing appointment for you and your pet...this way you are assured of having the date and time that your prefer.  Many clients book the "year in advance" and we print off a schedule of the date and time so you can keep it handy at your home or office.  We even telephone the day before to serve as a friendly reminder.

Because we work by appointment and time has been set aside for your pet, if you fail to reschedule an appointment, the service provider is left at the last minute without an appointment as well as the inability to fill the appointment with another client.  When this happens, at least 3 people lose; you, the service provider, and another client that would have taken your appointment.  Please remember that we request a 24-hour cancellation notice.

It's Florida...We Still Have Fleas!

red hydrant

 It's Florida...We Still Have Fleas!!

Many of our customers have lived and moved from other parts of this great country and come fall and winter had the luxury of not using Flea and Tick protection year round.  In Florida, it is not an option...it is a requirement!

Florida is known for its "healthy parasites" and we simply do not have the cold weather and hard freezes that kill off fleas and ticks.  Please remember to use preventative year round.  Set a date that is easy to remember.  For example, the house payment is due on the 15th of the month so pay the mortgage and give the flea and tick prevention.  Use the calendar on your phone or computer to set a friendly pop-up alert or reminder each month.

If you do unfortunately end up with fleas, remember to treat your home thoroughly.  Treat your lawn, carpets, beddings, sofa, chairs, draperies and even the car if your dog has ridden in the car.  This process may even take several months so please stay on top of the "pest-y" situation.

Trick or Treat or TRAUMA!

Ask the Groomer

Trick or Treat or TRAUMA!!!

Halloween has become a major holiday...just ask the costume and candy manufacturers!  To that end, candy and costumes can be harmful to your pets.

Halloween is a festive day -- and night -- for children, and a hectic one for adults: there are the decorations, the candy, pumpkin carving, crowds of trick-or-treaters to be lavished with seasonal treats, and generally good-natured mayhem.

But for the family pet, there are some Halloween hazards to be aware of. Here's our list of the top five, with suggestions on how to keep your Halloween celebration pet-safe and pet-friendly.

Halloween hazard #1: Chocolate
With chocolate bars and other chocolate-based treats in abundance, it's easy to forget that chocolate is toxic to pets. It contains a compound called theobromine.  If enough is ingested, your animal can suffer from vomiting, diarrhea, abnormal heart rhythms, tremors, seizures, and possible death.

If you keep a 'goodies basket' by the front door for trick-or-treaters, make sure your pet doesn't run off with any 'samples' for itself.  Candy wrappers also pose a health hazard when ingested. The wrappers can become lodged in the intestines and cause severe blockage and this will lead to expensive surgery and could also be fatal

Halloween hazard #2: Decorations
Halloween decorations have evolved from paper cutouts hung in the window to elaborate -- even lavish -- outdoor displays. Sometimes, the materials used can be dangerously attractive for pets. Small, low-hanging decorations on trees and shrubbery can tempt some pets to take a nibble, resulting in intestinal blockages.

Halloween hazard #3: Dangerous foods
Many common foods that are dangerous to pets may be more plentiful on Halloween because they are popular in common trick-or-treat goodies. In addition to chocolate, these include nuts, raisins, chewing gum, mints, and anything containing xylitol, a commonly used artificial sweetener. Xylitol -- often found in baked goods and candies -- has been associated with liver failure and death in dogs.

Halloween hazard #4: Anxiety & stress
Some pets enjoy the excitement of crowds and are eager to join in the fun. If your dog is a party animal, then by all means take it along trick-or-treating. But many dogs -- and certainly most cats -- become frightened or even uncharacteristically aggressive in crowds. If your pet belongs to the latter group, Halloween may be a good time to put it in a quiet room with food and water, away from all the hubbub.

Halloween hazard #5: Escape artists
With trick-or-treaters coming and going every few minutes, leaving the door open is a welcoming thing to do. But it can be a bit too tempting for a pet that just feels like "stepping out" for the evening. So keep a close eye on your pet to prevent any escapes.

You should also make sure that your pet is always wearing some kind of identification, just in case: microchipping is ideal; but at the very least, make sure your pet is wearing an identification or rabies tag with your contact information.

For children - and, let's face it, plenty of adults -- Halloween festivities are an eagerly awaited time of shared fun and frolic. Keeping in mind these five pet perils will go a long way to making sure your Halloween memories are all pleasant ones.

Can you hear me now?

A question we receive on a regular basis is "how do I care for my dog's ears at home?" The answer is quite simple and very economical!  I recommend that you simply use Isopropyl Alcohol and cottons balls.  If you use the wintergreen formula of the alcohol, it even adds a fresh scent, too!

Moisten the cotton ball with alcohol and gently wipe the inside of the ear.  Use as many cotton balls as it takes until it appears to be clean. Important to remember...do not use the same cotton ball in both ears.  You would not want to potentially transfer surface bacteria from one ear to another.

Save Big Money on your next
Grooming Appointment!

It is already September, which means kids are back in school and the Holidays will be here before you know it.  With that being said, my mind starts wondering about how I can better spend my money to enjoy the Holidays without racking up credit card bills.  I bet you are curious why your dog groomer is talking about the Holidays and credit card bills.  Well, here is why I am writing about them: there are things you can do to reduce your dog grooming expenses and improve your dog's well being.

The biggest up-charge in grooming is de-matting a dog's coat.  There are some free and inexpensive things you can do at home to avoid these charges, but first let's identify what is a "matt."  A "matt" is when a dog's coat gets "knotted and gnarly" and you cannot get a comb or brush through the coat all the way to the skin.

Many things can cause a matt; let me list a few for you.
  • The dog goes swimming in the pool and is left to air dry without being bathed or rinsed.
  • A dog may be chewing on its feet, legs or backside.
  • The dog walks in the wet grass then takes a nap on its wet underside...repeatedly!
  • The dog is bathed without being brushed out thoroughly before the bath.
  • The dog is not brushed regularly...regularly will vary by your dogs coat type.
  • Owners with multiple dogs have even found matts on one of their dogs because the dogs like chewing and licking each other.
So, now that we all are on the same page about what is a matt, let's talk about how to prevent them or remove them so you do not have to pay the groomer to do it for you.  For those of you that are unfamiliar with how much it costs to de-matt a dog, the charge is $15.00 for every 15 minutes.

The best way to avoid matts is to establish a regular brushing schedule for you and your dog.  The proper tools for brushing most dogs are a slicker brush and a metal comb.  These items can be purchased at The Red Hydrant for under $20.

What is an appropriate brush schedule for your dog?
This is something that we can help you plan based on our experience with your dog.

How and where is the best place to brush my dog?
The best place to brush the dog is typically elevated up on something that is comfortable for you.  I usually suggest putting a towel down on the washing machine or bathroom counter, for larger dogs brushing out on the patio table is good.  I do not recommend brushing on the floor, sofa or bed, these are the places for "loving" and "play time."  It is best to keep brushing as a separate activity.  Roman also offers FREE brushing and combing sessions to help you with getting the right brushing techniques for your dog.

Should I give treats while brushing?
My response is NO!  I suggest giving treats as the reward after the brushing session.  I don't think you would eat a box of cookies while your hair stylist or barber was brushing your hair!

What if my dog is matted ALL OVER?
When the matting becomes excessive...ALL OVER...the only humane thing to do is shave the dog's coat down to get under the matting.  This is a last resort because shaving a dog's coat off can cause other problems ranging from minor to severe in nature.   And remember this article is about saving money and shaving can be quite costly, anywhere from $5 to $25.

So, that is it on saving money by avoiding de-matt charges.  There are other things you can do to avoid additional grooming costs.  Please ask me next time you are in for a bath or grooming appointment and I can give you specific ideas for you and your dog.  Remember that having a regular brushing schedule not only saves money but it also improves your dog's health and well being!

Thank you for taking the time out of your busy day to spend a couple of minutes with us. We hope you have enjoyed this issue of BARKS and BYTES and that you found it informative.  We welcome your comments and suggestions and would love to hear from you.

Dog Days of Summer ...

The dog days of summer...

June was the warmest on record here in the Tampa area and we all remember how sweltering it was...and continues to be.  Although the picture seems comical, the message is simple.  It is BEST to offer your dog a cool place to rest and plenty of fresh water.  Dogs do not perspire like humans do...in fact, they "pant" to cool their body.  "Shaving" your dog down, and removing their entire coat...God's natural protection and insulation, also can place them at risk.  That can make them much more susceptible to irritations from the lawn chemicals, fleas and ticks.

Yes, you can trim the coat on a coated dog a slight bit shorter, but DO NOT SHAVE THEM.  Short coated dogs like in the picture here should not be shaved.  It will not stop, slow or retard the shedding...they will only shed short hairs until the coat hopefully grows back.  I can't tell you how many dogs I have seen, as they age and mature, grow uneven patches of their coat back and thus they look "sickly" and "mange-y".

According to the AKC...The coat on a dog acts as insulation from both hot and cold air temperatures. The coat traps the air close to the body, which is the same temperature as their body. When a dog is hot, it not only pants to regulate its body temperature (since dogs don't sweat through their skin like humans) but their coat traps the air closest to the skin and keeps it the same temperature as their ideal body temperature. Keeping their coats well groomed helps the coat do its job better. Matted, wet or shaved hair can't trap the body temperature air close to the skin to keep the dog comfortable in all climates. And, if you shave a dog down to the skin, you not only increase the risk of heatstroke but also sunburn. Breeds that are normally clipped year-round can continue the practice but don't turn your fluffy into a smoothie anytime soon. And for those hairless breeds, don't forget the sunscreen!

Remember, the best way to combat this crazy heat is simple...three basic steps:

  • Provide a cool dry place to rest and nap
  • Offer them lots of cool fresh water...refresh their water bowl throughout the day!
  • Brush your dog...regardless of coat length!  This also makes a great bonding experience and is also a great tool for teaching your kids how to properly care for and love a dog.
Come on in, the water is fine ... or is it?

Come on in,

the water is fine...or is it?

As a society, we have socialized most all dogs to the point that they are not allowed to perform the basic function that the breed was originally bred to perform.  How many Goldens and Labs do you know retrieve the kill from the hunt?  How many Australian Shepherds do you know work the herds?  How many terriers actually rat for vermin?  Some of us actually own water dogs that were bred to interact and have the coat to function in water.  But the family Yorkie, Shih Tzu, Maltese or Bichon are not born water dogs.

They were certainly not talking about the chlorinated family swimming pool either.  You know how drying to the skin a day in the pool can be.

This dries the coat and over time will change the color of the coat as well.
  • It would be a good idea to look at some animal CPR and first-aid.  Your Veterinarian and the American Red Cross are good sources for this.

National Industry Trade
Publication Seeks Opinion

For those of you who shop the Red Hydrant Boutique, you already know about some of the amazing treats, treasures and finds that Roman selects for the store.  He has over 20 years of retail related experience and it is no surprise that Souvenirs, Gifts and Novelties...America's Most Trusted Publication For The Gift Industry, sought Roman out for his thoughts regarding retailing in the Pet Industry.  The article about him was featured in the July issue and even distributed to every attendee at the New York Gift Show.

Manufactures are repeatedly contacting him to sample and try new treats and products.  Some are immediate hits and some are simply not that wonderful.  "Customers want value; regardless the price, the customer wants a well-made product that will last, and items made in America are their first choice," says Roman to the editor.

Remember that many of the items in the boutique are also available for special order, so if you do not see the size or color you need, simply give Roman the word and he can typically have that special item just for you in your hands within a week or two.  Most of his fall and holiday shopping has already been selected and ordered.  Get Ready...he has selected some AWESOME things!

  Canine "Mani/Pedi"

One of the topics that we receive questions on each day is related to nail care.  When should I do it?  Does it hurt?  How do you know where to stop?  How do I do it if he/she does not like their feet touched?

A dog's nails should be trimmed so that they just clear the floor (if you hear them clicking, they're probably too long). The nails should be trimmed with clippers that are designed for this purpose. Do not use ordinary scissors or your own nail clippers. You want to trim above the "quick," which is a blood vessel inside the nail.  At the Red Hydrant we will "clip" nails if they are excessively long then we will use a grinder to shorten, smooth and round the nail.  This extra step makes it much more pleasant if the dog jumps on your legs, gets on the furniture or even the upholstery in the car.

We will do our best to get them as short as possible, but if the nails have been over looked or neglected, it may take several visits every few weeks to get the nails back to proper length.

If your pet does not like his/her feet touched, the grinding method is often viewed as a much safer and effective way to trim the nails.  We are able to control the grinder more effectively than clippers if the dog is jumpy or shaking.  Another important piece of the puzzle to making this an effortless endeavor is to play with your dogs feet at home while you are watching TV or brushing.  Petting and stroking the feet helps to relax the dog for future nail trimming services.

Remember, we can typically do nail trims while you wait.  Simply call the store and let us know that you would like to come in for a nail trim and we can let you know a few time options for that particular day.

Hot Product! ...Fresh Breath in Minutes

PlaqClnz

Freshen Breath in Just 30 Seconds

At any one time, 80% of all dogs and 70% of all cats show signs of dental and oral health diseases. Regular dental care can add as much as five years to a pet's life. Groomers are one of the most important people in a pet's life -- and a partner in protecting their health. As a responsible, professional groomer, we are on the front lines for alerting your pet guardians of any potential health problems we observe and then recommend seeking veterinarian care.

PlaqClnz is a patented Oral Cleansing System that we have used for a year now with UNBELIEVABLE results. The process is quite simple.  First, we spray a Zinc based spray on the dogs teeth and gums.

Then while in the bath, we gently flush the mouth with the PlaqClnz oral irrigator to remove plaque and debris.  This is similar to a water pik treatment.  We then follow it up with a single-use tooth brush with chicken flavor toothpaste to enhance the pleasure for the dog.

The last step is an "at home" daily follow up.  You place a few drops of the PlaqClnz gel on your finger and swipe it on your dog's gums and teeth.  Nothing more or nothing less.  The gel does the rest!  The gel is both odorless and tasteless so there is no resistance.  This step continues to support the softening of plaque and thus makes it easy to blast away on the next spa visit and the best part is that it only takes 30 seconds out of your busy day!

Why Zinc?  University-based research shows pet bad breath and gingivitis can generally be improved by using technically advanced oral care products that contain zinc - a metal ion chelated with an amino acid. Zinc inhibits odor formation because of the ion's affinity for sulfur. The zinc complexes with hydrogen sulfide to form an insoluble zinc

BARKS and BYTES
JULY 2010
Greetings!

DREAMS to REALITY
...the long way!
After more than two years of dreaming of hosting my own Blog and longing for the opportunity to be able to touch our great customers, such as yourselves, our dreams have finally become reality.  With the assistance and coaching from an amazing and very talented and patient woman, Sylvia Myers, Sylvia owns SAM Virtual Support, LLC, which is committed to providing extraordinary administrative solutions to small business owners, virtually. I am proud to share The Red Hydrants Pet Spa and Boutiques FIRST edition of BARKS and BYTES

This will be a casual format to share important information about pet care, trends in grooming, money saving tips for grooming at home, announcements of new and special products in the Boutique, safety tips, wacky pet humor and stories.  It will also serve as a vehicle for our customers that ask specific questions that concern them and their family about the care and well being of the family pet.

This first edition is also being dedicated to a very special woman, a dear friend to many and the person responsible for the name BARKS and BYTESLois Lasater passed away very unexpectedly on May the 20th, 2010.  She was a long time Floridian and about two and half years ago, re-located to us here in Land O Lakes.  Overnight she had a great pet sitting business and frequently had to turn customers away simply because she was booked to capacity.  She refused to overbook herself simply to make an extra dollar or two.  She loved the walks with her four legged "friends" and told countless stories about how cute and precious they all were.  She snapped pictures daily of all her "buddies."  Many clients of the Red Hydrant also availed themselves to her services and were shocked at her passing.  Please know that a week does not go by that we all don't miss her and desire to hear one more of her fun pet sitting stories.  Lois...you will be missed by many, but never forgotten!

Sincerely,

ASK THE GROOMER!

Ask the Groomer
How many times have you wanted to ask
the groomer "why?" or "why not?" when it comes to grooming your dog?
1) Why does it take as much time to groom a puppy as it takes to groom my adult dog?
2) What can I do to get my dog to stop shedding all over the house?  I just want to shave the entire coat off!
3) Why is it important to keep my dogs nails trimmed short?
4) The ears smell, what can I do at home?

These are only some examples of the questions that I am repeatedly asked.

PLEASE email your question to BARKSandBYTES@theredhydrant.com and look for a response in the upcoming issues.
This promises to be a great forum for information.

STAMPS for SHELTERS

As of April 30th, you could begin purchasing stamps at the post office that help to buy food for shelter animals.

I think this would be a great thing to spread around.  Would you please forward to your contacts to help spread the word?  Or buy on line at Pet Stamps for Shelters.  What a great and easy way to help without a huge time commitment.

STORM READINESS!

ARC logoYou and I typically wake up, see that it sunny and go about our day.  We know that this time of the year here in Florida everyday has a possibility for a flash thunderstorm and heavy rain often with wind and lightening.  Hurricane season has also begun and forecasters predict several strong storms this year.  We of course all hope that they are wrong, but it is so important to BE PREPARED!  Just as you have a routine and system in place for gathering the kids, prescriptions, family valuables and basic supplies before you move to a storm shelter or make a car trip to a safer part of the country.  Your pet has some very specific needs as well.

Disaster planning for you and your pets
The Humane Society of the United States offers Disaster Planning Tips for Pets, Livestock and Wildlife. Whether it's a large-scale natural catastrophe or an unforeseen emergency that causes you to leave your home temporarily, everyone's family can benefit from having a household evacuation plan in place before disaster strikes. Every disaster plan must include your pets!

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) offers the following tips to pet owners designing an emergency safety plan:
+  If you evacuate your home, DO NOT LEAVE YOUR PETS BEHIND! Pets most likely cannot survive on their own; and if by some remote chance they do, you may not be able to find them when you return.
+  For public health reasons, many emergency shelters cannot accept pets. Find out which motels and hotels in your area allow pets -- well in advance of needing them. Include your local animal shelter's number in your list of emergency numbers -- they might be able to provide information concerning pets during a disaster.
+  Make sure identification tags are up to date and securely fastened to your pet's collar. If possible, attach the address and/or phone number of your evacuation site. If your pet gets lost, his tag is his ticket home. Make sure you have a current photo of your pet for identification purposes.
+  Make sure you have a secure pet carrier, leash or harness for your pet so that if he panics, he can't escape.
+  Take pet food, bottled water, medications, veterinary records, cat litter/pan, can opener, food dishes, first aid kit and other supplies with you in case they're not available later. While the sun is still shining, consider packing a "pet survival" kit, which could be easily deployed if disaster hits.
+  If you are unable to return to your home right away, you may need to board your pet. Most boarding kennels, veterinarians and animal shelters will need your pet's medical records to make sure all vaccinations are current. Include copies in your "pet survival" kit along with a photo of your pet.
+  If it is impossible to take your pet with you to temporary shelter, contact friends, family, veterinarians, or boarding kennels to arrange for care. Make sure medical and feeding information, food, medicine and other supplies accompany your pet to his foster home. NOTE: Some animal shelters will provide temporary foster care for owned pets in times of disaster, but this should be considered only as a last resort.
+  If you have no alternative but to leave your pet at home, there are some precautions you must take, but remember that leaving your pet at home alone can place your animal in great danger! Confine your pet to a safe area inside -- NEVER leave your pet chained outside! Place a notice outside in a visible area, advising what pets are in the house and where they are located. Provide a phone number where you or a contact can be reached as well as the name and number of your vet.

DOES YOUR DOG SHED?

A day does not go by at the Red Hydrant that we do not have at least 20% of our customers inquire about the excessive shedding that is occurring with their pet and the struggles it creates with regards to home maintenance.  Golden's, Lab's, Collie's, Pug's, Sheppard's, Bull Dog's, Chihuahua's, and Spaniel's are some of the breeds that we hear the most frustration from their owners.  Shaving the dog down is NOT the answer.  The solution is to remove the dead coat...this is typically the coat the floats all over your house and accumulates under furniture, on top of furniture and in corners.

De-Shed Shampoo by Davis Mfg. is the solution. Shedding is natural, and necessary for a healthy coat, yet excessive hair causes tangles and mats in the coat, and a mess in the car and home. De-Shed Shampoo loosens the undercoat during bathing so hair literally slips away into the tub. Enhanced with protein and amino acids, it fortifies and strengthens overworked and damaged hair leading to a shiny, manageable and healthy looking coat. Safe for dogs, cats, puppies and kittens.
You can purchase this product in the Boutique for use at home for only $11.95 for the 12oz bottle. This is concentrated and it easly dilutes with 10 parts water to 1 part shampoo.  This actually makes it very economical...once diluted it is only $0.10 an ounce.  That is a GREAT price for a Veterinarian product that is easy to use with HUGE success!

When your pet is in the Spa for a bath or grooming appointment, we can also use this wonderful product for a nominal up-charge to enhance the benefits of the service.
